Nathan Moore, a senior majoring in psychology at California State University, Fresno, yesterday was named as the University Volunteer of the Year by the Volunteer Bureau of Fresno County.

Moore, who has volunteered for community projects since high school, came to Fresno State on a music scholarship to play the trumpet before changing his major to psychology.

Moore has been involved with projects mentoring local school children as well as the Big Brother/Big Sister Program and student youth camps.

A McNair Scholar, Moore is active on campus helping with Peach Blossom Festival and Kid’s Day. As the director of University Student Union Productions, Moore volunteers 20 hours per week organizing and monitoring student-based activities and events.

Described by friends as a “role model for young volunteers, a born leader, and an inspiration,” Moore says he is motivated by the fun and joy of helping others.

Chosen as this year’s Outstanding Student Achiever by the Black Faculty and Staff Association on campus, Moore also received a national award as an Outstanding Young Man of America.

Moore is graduating in May and has plans to pursue a graduate degree.
