Grantland Johnson, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, will be the keynote speaker at the Advancing Mental Health and Wellness Conference — Multicultural Competencies for the New Millennium scheduled for Sept. 21 and 22 at California State University, Fresno.
The early bird registration deadline is Sept. 1 for the early bird fee of $95 that covers two days. Registration is available through the Division of Extended Education at (559) 278-0333 or www.csufresno.edu/ExtendedEd. (Late registration is $105. by Sept. 15. A one-day fee is $55).
The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Continuing education units are available for licensed professionals.
Appointed by Gov. Gray Davis in January 1999, Johnson is a member of the governor’s cabinet and serves as his chief adviser on health, social services and employment policy.
In addition to Johnson, this new two-day conference will feature a team of nationally known and local experts.
The first day will feature general sessions on cultural competency leadership, a culturally sensitive framework and its application to the mental health practice, and research on cultural diversity. An American Indian blessing and lunch will be presented as well as cultural presentations at lunch. The second day will present small group sessions on Latina/Hispanic, African American, Asian American, and Native American populations.
While open to the public, the conference is designed for mental health and family therapists; psychologists; licensed and unlicensed social workers; rehabilitation counselors; administrators of agencies delivering mental and social services; other mental health workers; nurses; graduate students in the mental health, psychology, social work, rehabilitation counseling, and nursing fields; and school administrators, counselors, teachers and staff.
