In its ongoing quest to provide a top music program, the Bulldog Marching Band at California State University, Fresno announced its fall 2000 lineup of events beginning with the Sierra Cup band competition on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Bulldog Stadium.

Other events this fall include the Koncerts for Kids on Oct. 28; and Band Day on Nov. 4 featuring high school bands from throughout the valley performing during halftime of the Hawaii football game.

The Sierra Cup band competition next week, which feature bands from throughout California and two from Nevada, began in 1998 with its first national caliber band competition featuring 17 bands. Competition begins at 5 p.m. with trophy presentations at 10 p.m.

This year, Fresno State Band Detector Gary Gilroy expects 18 bands from California and Nevada. They will be judged in nine categories with awards for the top band in each. A grand champion award will feature a perpetual trophy.

The categories are individual visual performance, ensemble music performance, ensemble visual performance, music general effect, percussion, individual music performance, color guard, visual general effect, and drum major.

California high school bands scheduled to attend are: Arroyo Grande, Buchanan (Clovis), Bullard (Fresno), Central (Fresno), Ceres, Clovis, Clovis West, Corcoran, East Bakersfield, Hanford, Hanford West, Delano, Los Banos, Lemoore and Ridgeview.

Attending from Reno, NV will be Edward C. Reed and Robert McQueen High Schools.

The band is part of the Music Department in the College of Arts and Humanities.
