ASI’s Next Step

The passing of the Legacy 2000 recreation center referendum is just one example of the success that ASI has had this semester.  The current senate has individuals committed to the students and the school.  In fact, student involvement in both the ASI and in various University committees has increased dramatically in the past two years.  More and more students are interested and they are getting involved.

Still, our campus along with all other CSU campuses has had major problems with apathy and a lack of involvement.  This lack of awareness and interest can be attributed to a number of factors, some of which are unavoidable.  There are things that can be done to change this trend.

The ASI acknowledges that it has a major role in this process and will continue to make effort at increasing awareness and involvement.  This was and still is a top priority for the student senate.  Some examples of what steps have been taken to increase awareness and involvement include: the ASI booth located in the Free Speech Area last year, the ASI supplement published last October, the ASI Info-Fest 99’ at last years Californopia, the Red Rave tailgates at football games the past two seasons, and the efforts of the individual senators to publicize ASI through clubs and organizations, classes, and various on-campus programs.

All of these steps have worked and make a major difference in increasing involvement and awareness.  The key now is to establish some consistency with these various effort at publicity.  A part of this is the strategic planning that is current being put together.  Through this process things such as the ASI booth, supplement, and web site will become routine.

Although it is not often published or mentioned in the Collegian, the ASI has taken huge steps in changing it own position on-campus as well as making sure that it is represented on university issues.  A number of senators and at-large students sit on committee ranging from parking to food service.  These individuals are ensuring that the students’ opinions are voiced.  By further increasing the interaction between students and the ASI this process will be even more effective.

Looking to the future, the ASI will take every effort to continue to represent students while working to improve the campus.   This next semester more of an effort will be made to publicize ASI.  A piece of this process is the increased communication and cooperation between ASI and the Collegian.  ASI would gladly submit weekly updates and commentaries.

The approval of the recreation center referendum marks a major turning point in Fresno State history.  It shows that students care about the future of the campus and that they want to be a part of it.  The ASI is committed to working with and for the students.
