The CSU Chancellor’s Office has awarded California State University, Fresno a $34,000 grant to support the university’s proposal for a Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning that will be held March 29 on campus, President John D. Welty announced today.

The CSU funds are from a grant approved by the state legislature and allocated to the CSU by the Commission on Improving Life Through Service (Senate Bill 984). A

campus-wide committee is currently planning the event that will honor the founder of the United Farm Workers union.

Ofelia Gamez, director of the College Assistance Migrant Program at Fresno State, will administer the grant and coordinate the March 29 celebration in cooperation with the Fresno County Office of Education.

The goal of the celebration is to educate students about Chavez and his values and provide service to the community, Gamez said.

Chavez’s birthday, which was proclaimed a state holiday by the California

legislature last year and recognized by the California State University board of trustees last month, is March 31. Because the date falls on a Saturday this year, the CSU campuses will be closed Friday, March 30, in observance.

The California Commission on Improving Life Through Service (CILTS), the

Governor’s community service commission, was established in 1994 and is dedicated to uniting Californians of all ages and backgrounds in community services. CILTS promotes citizen involvement by all Californians and strongly supports national and community service and volunteerism programs.
