Answer: Winner of first- and second-place awards in the Ninth Annual Human Resource Management Collegiate Competition.

Question: What is California State University Fresno’s Craig School of Business?

If you like game shows, you would have enjoyed watching Fresno State students sweep up the prizes in a “Jeopardy”-style competition in Long Beach earlier this month. Using the game-show approach, students studying human resource management test their knowledge of management practices, employee selection, labor and employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, and safety and health.

It was the fifth-straight sweep of the top two positions by Craig School undergraduate students at the “HR Games” sponsored by the Society for Human Resource management.

The next challenge comes Saturday (March 31) at the regional competition at the University of Nevada, Reno, when Fresno State’s first-place team squares off against state champions from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah.

“Our students have established an incredible record in this competition and have proven that The Craig School has one of the top Human Resources Management programs in the state,” said Dr. Mark Keppler, who is one of the team’s advisers.

Team members winning first place are Kelley Lucich (student coach), Carrie Belsito and Mary Flynn of Fresno and Marylou Mendoza Miller of Laton. They advance to the regional competition. Second-place team members are Nazik Arisian (student coach), Yvette Lopez and Tina Wessels of Fresno and Susan Revillar of Stockton. In addition to Keppler, coaches are Dr. Julie Olson-Buchanan and Diane Decker.

“It’s definitely a learning experience,” senior Carrie Belsito said of the competition. “Along the way, you realize that you’re having all of this fun, too.”

Olson-Buchanan said the state competition was particularly rigorous this year. “We were extremely proud of how our students rose to the occasion with academic excellence, professionalism and grace under pressure,” she said.

The winner of the regional competition will join five other regional winners from around the country at the National Championship during the 53rd annual Society for Human Resource Management conference in San Francisco on June 25.
