California State University, Fresno students captured four top awards at recent regional and statewide research competitions.

Susan Rae Macy and Colby J. Linder won two of the nine graduate categories at the 15th annual California State University Student Research Competition on April 30 in San Jose.

The conference exhibits research by California State University undergraduate and graduate students from the 23 CSU campuses, said Dr. Thomas McClanahan, Fresno State’s associate vice president for grants and research. A total of 156 students presented their research in nine categories and were judged by panels of professionals.

Macy received first place in the Education category for her presentation, “The Validity and Reliability of Program Quality Review as a Process for Educational Program Evaluation in California’s Elementary Schools.” She received her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Fresno State last May.

Linder’s presentation, “Ovarian Development Inhibition by Methyl Farnesoate, in the Tadpole Shrimp Triops longicaudatus,” won in the Biological and Agricultural Sciences category. Linder is pursuing a master’s degree in biology and also tied for first place at the 22nd annual Central California Research Symposium at Fresno State on April 20.

Other presenters representing Fresno State at the statewide competition were Christy Fiorentino, Michelle Karell, Andrew Lilles, Jovita Ornelas, Lori Orosco,

Bonnie Tomasovich, Sajeemas Pasakdee and Lany Sivongsay.

The 22nd annual Central California Research Symposium held April 20 at Fresno State drew 350 presenters and guests from across the state.

Linder tied for first place in the graduate division with Susan B. Mallek, whose presentation was “Potential for Using Allium spp. Amendments, With and Without Soil Heating, For Weed Control Via Biofumigation.”

Honorable mentions went to Fresno State students Mireya Macias in the graduate division, Wendy Jackson in the undergraduate division and Robert P. Murray in the doctorate division.

Fresno State winners in the poster division were Brian O’Roak and G. W. Polack, first place, and Mary Scully, honorable mention.

The symposium at Fresno State, hosted by the Grants and Research Office, brought together investigators, students and faculty from a variety of disciplines to share the results of their scholarly work. It was co-sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program, Valley Children’s Hospital and Alliant University.
