California State University, Fresno’s student operated non-commercial radio station, 90.7 KFSR FM, will broadcast the 2001 Silicon Valley Football Classic live from San Jose, on New Year’s Eve as the Bulldogs face the Michigan State Spartans.

The broadcast will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, with a special pregame show starting at 10 a.m., the live play-by-play broadcast of the game at noon, full coverage of the halftime show and concluding with a post game show.

The broadcast, which will be the first of its kind for KFSR, will be an educational training endeavor, said student Station Manager Joe Moore. KFSR is also Fresno State’s radio home for women’s basketball and softball.

“We’re very excited to have this unique opportunity to take part in the Silicon Valley Football Classic,” said Moore. “This will be an immensely valuable educational experience for our student staff. We’ve never before had the opportunity to take part in a football broadcast here at KFSR, and thanks to cooperation from the Athletic Department, KMJ, and the Silicon Valley Bowl, our students will be participating in a one-of-a-kind hands on broadcasting experience.”

The game is also broadcast live, as are all Bulldog football games, on KMJ 580 AM.

Moore said KFSR “will take advantage of the fact that it is a non-commercial station, by providing a variety of different features not normally hear on regular commercial broadcasts.”

KFSR’s two hour pregame show will feature a wide variety of material, ranging from interviews with special guests, players and coaches, game by game recaps of the 2001 season for both teams, and of course, analysis of the matchup between the Dogs and Spartans.

In place of commercial breaks, KFSR listeners will find a series of short capsules about the history of the Fresno State football program and past Bulldog’s bowl appearances.

During halftime, KFSR will turn its microphones over to the Bulldog Marching Band, broadcasting its entire performance.

“We hope our broadcast will be a showcase for what we’ve been doing here at KFSR for the past several years, especially in our Sports Department,” says Moore. “Our crew is working hard to make sure the production values for the broadcast are right up there with what Fresno State fans expect in a football broadcast.”

The day before, on Sunday, Dec. 30, KFSR sports will undertake another major project, broadcasting the Fresno State/Louisiana Tech Women’s basketball game, not only on KFSR, but also on a simulcast feed heard throughout the state of Louisiana on the LA Tech Radio Network.

“This will most likely be the biggest game of the year, with nationally ranked LA Tech coming to town, so we’re very excited to be calling the play by play, which will be heard by fans thousands of miles away,” Moore said. “It will also serve as a good tune up for our crew, which will be heading up to San Jose right after the basketball game ends.”

KFSR’s live broadcast of the Silicon Valley Bowl will be anchored with play by play from KFSR’s Jason Anaforian, and will feature reports and color commentary from Moore and other KFSR staff members.

KFSR can be heard throughout the greater Fresno Clovis metropolitan area at 90.7 FM. For more information about KFSR call 559-278-2598 or visit http://www.fresnostate.edu/artshum/mcj/students/student-media/kfsr.html.
