A Night of Honor at Fresno State

Fresno, April 4 -- Several hundred people gathered at Fresno State tonight to honor students who had qualified for the nation's largest and oldest collegiate honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.

The honor society recognizes academic excellence among college and university students throughout the U.S. The Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society has a long and distinguished history. The society was founded in 1897 and is recognized as one of the two most prestigious national collegiate honor societies (the other being Phi Beta Kappa, which recognizes excellence on only the liberal arts).

The Fresno chapter was established in 1953 and has been honored more than any other chapter in the country for the excellence of its programs for student recognition. The Fresno honor society recognizes academic excellence in all majors both at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Admission to the honor society is by invitation only. Both superior scholarship and good character are criteria for membership. Undergraduate students must be seniors, completed one year of on-campus attendance, at least 21 units from Fresno State, and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5. Graduate students must complete a graduate program with a minimum overall GPA of 3.9.

In addition to the induction of new student members to the honor society, several other awards were given at tonight's event were:

  • Chapter Nominee for National Fellowship to Kim Fumiko Goto

  • University Artist Award to Steve Yarbrough, professor, Department of English

  • University Scholar Award to K.C. Chen, professor and chair of the Department of Finance and Business Law.

  • Special recognition to faculty members Bruce Thornton, professor, foreign languages and literature, and James Walton, coordinator, Ethnic Studies Program.

  • Special recognition to Judy Sakaki, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and to undergraduate advisors Marilyn Martino and Janell Tattsumura.
