Press conference Wed., Aug. 1:
state fair wine medals presentation

The California State Fair gold medal and Best of Class  ribbons have arrived!

California State University, Fresno Viticulture and Enology Department officials will present the state fair awards that its wines won recently to university president Dr. John D. Welty during a special press conference presentation tomorrow, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m.

The presentation, at the university winery on Barstow Avenue, will include a display of the awards won by Fresno State student-produced wines during the 2000-2001 year, including the Jerry Mead New World International Competition and the recent prestigious Los Angeles and Orange County Fairs. The Viticulture and Research Center will also present a limited wine-tasting of the award-winning wines.

At the California State Fair Wine Competition, Fresno State’s 1999 Barbera Linden Hills Vineyards received a gold medal with a high 94 rating and a prestigious Best of Class in the California State Appellation region super award – making the Barbera a nine-time award winner for the university’s enology students.

Fresno State also won a state fair silver medal for its 1999 Syrah Saviez Farms and a bronze medal for its 2000 White Zinfandel, both produced from grapes grown in Fresno County.

Dr. Robert Wample, chair of the university’s Viticulture and Enology Department and director of the Viticulture and Enology Research Center, will join Fresno State Winemaster Kenneth Fugelsang and Production Supervisor Kevin Connor in presenting the awards to Welty and Dr.  J. Michael Ortiz, provost and vice president of academic affairs.
