Fresno State Announces New Deadlines for Admission in Spring and 2004-05

State budget cutbacks and legislative mandates on enrollment growth have prompted California State University, Fresno officials to announce strict new deadlines and restrictions for admission applications for the spring 2004 semester and the 2004-05 academic year.

Officials are urging prospective students to pay close attention to deadlines and submit their applications to Fresno State as early as possible.

The measures to control enrollment come after the California State University Chancellor’s Office reviewed legislative mandates in the 2003-04 budget bill approved by the Legislature.  CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said the campuses must keep enrollments within target levels to assure quality and access. (For CSU Chancellor Reed’s full statement on the budget, click here.)

At Fresno State, the following restrictions are now in place:

  • Applications for the fall 2003 semester are closed.

  • Applications for spring 2004 will be accepted for one month only, from Aug. 1-31, from upper-division transfer students with 56 or more units and returning students. Graduate students may apply from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 for the spring.

  • The campus is not accepting applications from first-time freshmen or lower-division transfer students for the spring 2004 semester.

  •  Applications for the fall 2004 semester will be accepted beginning Oct. 1, 2003.

Bernie Vinovrski, associate vice president for enrollment services at Fresno State, recommends students get their forms filed as soon as possible because a record number of applications for admission in 2004-05 are expected. Applications increased by more than 2,000 for the upcoming fall semester and will contribute to the largest enrollment in the university’s history this year, an expected 21,500 students. Classes start Aug. 25.

“We were third in the state – and first among large CSU campuses – in terms of the percentage increase in the number of applications,” Vinovrski said.

The result of the increasing number of applications is higher enrollment. For the last two years, Fresno State’s enrollment has hit record highs, and another new mark is expected this fall.

Vinovrski notes that the increases in applications and enrollment come in spite of higher fees and earlier deadlines. Plus, he said, the academic qualifications of new students has been steadily improving.

“All of this indicates that students see the value in going to college and they view Fresno State as an excellent choice,” Vinovrski said.

Applications for the spring 2004 semester are available at www.csumentor.edu and must be filed electronically.
