STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT WELTY ON SHUTTLE TRAGEDY

It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the space shuttle Columbia tragedy this morning and the apparent loss of the seven astronauts, including Fresno State alumnus, mission Commander Rick Husband.

Col. Husband was a true American hero who willingly accepted the risks involved in his job as an astronaut in order to advance this country’s scientific knowledge of space and flight.

Col. Husband was a proud Bulldog, who only last fall told the university family  how much his education at Fresno State meant to him and to his success in joining the astronaut corps. In fact, he asked us for a Fresno State memento to take with him on the Columbia mission, so that he could honor the university where he earned his master’s degree.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to the Husband family, including Rick’s wife and two children, and our sympathy to all of the families of the Columbia crew members.
