Fresno, Jan. 9 - When the NASA shuttle Columbia launches into space next Thursday (Jan. 16), its Bulldog alumni commander will take a souvenir item from Fresno State into space with him. Air Force Col. Rick Husband, a 1990 graduate of Fresno State, was sent a red sweatshirt with Fresno State in large letters across the chest. He plans to wear the shirt while in space and have a photo taken that will be framed and presented to President John D. Welty during a visit to the campus later this spring, said Tom Uribes who has been planning the project for University Relations with Husband and NASA. Kennel Bookstore manager Ron Durham donated the sweatshirt. Husband, who earned his master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1990 through the university's distance learning program at Edwards Air Force Base, was honored in November as a Top Dog Outstanding Alumnus along with 10 other former Bulldogs.
