Chicano Alumni Association Presents Cinco de Mayo Celebration May 5

The Chicano Alumni Association of California State University, Fresno will hold its annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration Reception on Monday, May 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Smittcamp Alumni House (2625 E. Keats Ave.) at Fresno State.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature
entertainment by the Fresno State Mariachi and Trio Romance, as well asappetizers and a no-host bar. Prizes also will be given out and
Chicano/Latino Dean's Medalist students will be recognized.

The Fresno State Mariachi, the university's own student troupe, performs from 6 to 7:00 p.m. followed by Edgar and His Trio, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. Parking in Lot V, across from the alumni house, is free.

The observance commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862, when a poorly equipped and undermanned Mexican Army defeated the superior French Army in a two-hour battle.

The anniversary is celebrated in the United States both as an expression of bicultural pride and of historical relevance, said Manuel Olgín, Chicano Alumni Association president.

Parking in Lot V is free. For more information, contact Olgín at (559) 278-2999.
