Evelyn Husband Coming To Fresno For
Alumni Tribute To Col. Husband

Tribute Page

Evelyn Husband, widow of Colonel Rick Husband, will come to Fresno for a special tribute to the late commander of the Space Shuttle Columbia and Fresno State alumnus at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Col. Husband and Columbia crew perished upon the shuttle's re-entry into earth's atmosphere on Feb. 1.

Col. Husband, who graduated from Fresno State in 1990 with a master's degree in mechanical engineering, was scheduled to receive the 2002 College of Engineering and Computer Science award at last year's Top Dog dinner but was unable to attend because at the time he was in training to command the Columbia mission that launched in January, 2003.

He did, however, send a video in which he offered to take a Fresno State souvenir into space as an expression of his appreciation for the education he earned at Fresno State --- that helped him reach his dream to become a United States astronaut.

(The video can be seen at www.FresnoStateNews.com as well as video of the tribute the university held for him Feb. 5.)

The Office of University Relations arranged for its distinguished alumnus to take a Fresno State sweatshirt and was working with him and wife, Evelyn, for a trip to Fresno sometime in the spring so he could present to President Welty a photo of him wearing the red sweatshirt in space.

It was during that visit that the Alumni Association had planned to present his 2002 Top Dog award to him.

The colonel had also invited a representative of the university to attend the Columbia launch Jan. 16. President Welty sent Dr. Peter Smits, vice president of advancement, to represent Fresno State and during that trip, Smits met Evelyn and the Husband children. He since maintained ties with Mrs. Husband and helped arrange for her to visit Fresno and receive the award for her husband at the 2003 Top Dog dinner Oct. 30.
