23 University High School Students Earn ‘AP Scholar’ Honors

DECEMBER 8, 2004 -- Twenty-three former and current students at University High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams.

University High School is a charter school of the Sierra Unified School District located on the campus of California State University, Fresno and sponsored by the university’s College of Arts and Humanities. Established in 2000 as a college prep school with an equal emphasis on academics and music, UHS has a current enrollment of 350 students and graduated its first class in 2004.

Students take AP Exams in May every year after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 17 percent of the more than one million high school students in almost 15,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on a student’s performance on AP Exams.

One student, Stephen Ho, a member of University High School’s first graduating class of 2004, qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are 2004 graduates Melissa Cabral (UCLA), John Dawson (Reed College), Geoffrey Gross (University of Redlands), Peter Guekguezian (St. John's, Annapolis), Stephen Ho (Harvard), David Rapp (Fresno City College) and Peter Witt (Stanford after a year in China).

Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 or higher and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are 2004 graduates Abigail Dillon (Oberlin College) and Alexander Early (UC
Berkeley), and current senior Carson Baucher.

Thirteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 3 or higher on 3 or more AP Exams taken. These students are 2004 graduates Erin Connor (Rockland College), Raeonna Einerson (UC Berkeley), Jena Gardner (Northwestern), Addison Larsen (BYU), Sukhmani Singh (CalTech), Jason Sue (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), and Irene Yen (UC Berkeley), and current seniors Lisa Eleazarian, Meredith Esguerra, Andrew Hall, Yosef Mahmood, Eric Ritter and Elaine Shrestha.
