Is the message of a French author-philosopher who lived 300 years ago relevant today?

Dr. David Ross, a California State University, Fresno professor and president of the Alliance Francaise de Fresno, will explore Voltaire’s work “Candide” and its relevance in the 21st century

at the College of Arts and Humanities’ Intellectual and Artistic Exploration Lecture series on Wednesday, March 16.

The lecture is titled “Voltaire’s Masterpiece ‘Candide’ and Enlightenment.” It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Smittcamp Alumni House,

The lecture will focus mainly on “Candide,” a key piece of literature in the 18th century.

Ross has been a professor of foreign languages at Fresno State for more than 35 years. He received his Ph.D. in French from UCLA in 1974. His expertise is in French, Spanish and Portuguese.

The College of Arts and Humanities Lecture Series is a public service provided to the campus and regional community free of charge.
