Business Teams Take Top 2 Prizes At HR Collegiate Competition

The Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno captured the top award and second place at the 14th annual “HR Games.”

The state champion team members were Fresno State students Leslie Gee and Liwpho Saechao of Fresno and Amy Van Dyk of Tulare. Winning second place were Kathy Copeland of Visalia, Ellen Dias of Madera and Ethan Feist of Fresno.

Hosted by Fresno State on Feb. 28, the Craig School of Business teams competed against 11 other teams from California State University campuses in San Luis Obispo, Pomona, Chico, Long Beach, San Jose and Stanislaus.

Both Fresno State teams will proceed to the Pacific West Regional Competition in April and will compete against state champions from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Colorado and Hawaii. The winner will join four other “Area Champions” from around the country and compete for the National Championship at the 57t Annual Society for Human Resource Management Conference in San Diego in June.

“We couldn’t have better representatives of our school, university and community,” said adviser Dr. Julie Olsen-Buchanan. “Our students were not only extremely well-prepared and knowledgeable, they demonstrated remarkable grace under pressure.”

Using a “Jeopardy” TV show format, the competition tests students in their knowledge in all areas of management practices, employee selection, labor and employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, and safety and health.

University advisers attending the games were Olson-Buchanan, Diane Decker and Dr. Rudy Sanchez. Alumni advisers are Sara Coppenger, Mary Flynn, Michael Smith, Tina Kliss, Erin Baber and Jennifer Russell.
