California State University, Fresno will host the Central California Regional Math,

Engineering and Science (MESA) Day on April 23 with California Assemblywoman Nicole Parra delivering the keynote address at 9 a.m.

More than 500 middle school and high school students are expected to participate in the

hands-on math and science competition that returns to Fresno State after a four-year absence.

It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the North Gym and other locations on campus. The competitions will be held in Parking Lot Q on Barstow Ave.

Representatives from local industry as well as delegates from the MESA statewide office will be participating during the day’s events.

The MESA Day event gives students a chance to meet like-minded students and vie for academic awards during the day. Students from different schools, districts and communities will join in the spirit of competition as they display their individual skills and talents.

“Students having been working all academic year to produce projects that incorporate the axioms of mathematics, the principles of engineering, and the laws of science,” said Oussama Alkhalili, MESA Schools Program Director.

IN addition to host Fresno State, participants will come from four other regional MESA centers: University of California, Santa Barbara; California Polytechnic University; University of California, Santa Cruz; and Coarsegold.

Since 1970, MESA’s academic development program has supported educationally disadvantaged students so they can excel in math and science and graduate with degrees in engineering, science and technology.

Seventy percent of all MESA graduating high school seniors go on to college, compared to

49 percent of California graduating high school seniors.

MESA education partners include the University of California, the California State University, California Community Colleges, independent colleges and universities, the California

Department of Education, Indian education centers, school districts and individual schools.
