MEDIA INFO — Human Powered Vehicle Challenge at Fresno State April 29-May

The West Coast Human Powered Vehicle Challenge begins today (April 29) at 2 p.m. at California State University, Fresno and runs through Sunday (May 1).

More than 200 mechanical engineering students from universities around the nation will swarm the Fresno State campus in student-designed and —built human-powered vehicles that will race in timed sprint and endurance races on the university campus throughout the weekend.

The two primary locations: Barstow Avenue between Willow and Chestnut and in Lot Q on Barstow Ave. east of Cedar Avenue. Barstow will be closed at that point between 5 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Saturday. Organizers will be wearing red polo shorts and will make an effort to assist media vehicles upon arrival.

The return track on Barstow MAY be open fort television trucks pending activity. Please see organizers on site and follow their instructions.

BEST VISUALS:

Friday 5-8 p.m. – VEHICLE DIPSLAY — Engineering East outside (south entrance): all vehicles will be on static display in formation fro registration and safety inspection. (Safety inspections begin at 2 p.m.)

MEDIA PARKING: Use Lot l. Enter off Barstow at Maple Ave. (south) to San Ramon (west) to dead-end. Turn south into Lot I. Please avoid parking on campus sidewalks, unless organizers indicate there is availability. NO VEHCILES ALLOWED ON GRASS OR HANCIPAP STALLS AT ANY TIME. Please follow organizers directions at all times. They will make every effort to provide close access.

Saturday (8 a.m. to noon) – SPRINT RACE — Barstow Ave. between Willow and Chestnut Ayes.

MEDIA PARKING: For the Sprint Race on Saturday morning, Barstow Ave from Willow to Chestnut Ayes. Is the race course so it is closed to through traffic. Media vehicles may park at Willow where the race begins for race-start photos. To get to the end of the course, please drive north on Willow to Bullard, west to Chestnut, and south back to Barstow. There will be about six different races lasting about 2-3 minutes with about 15 minute intervals in between. Some parking should be avail be at both ends of the course. See event organizers upon arrival.

Saturday (2:15 to 415 p.m.) – HPVC UTILITY EVENT — at the Utility Course on Lot Q located on Barstow Ave. east of Cedar Avenue.

MEDIA PARKING: available in the east end of Lot Q, nearest the viticulture and etiology building. Watch for red-shirted organizers.
