A new Mentoring Institute at California State University, Fresno has the goal of impacting student success by bring students and faculty together for closer interaction.

Provost Jeri Echeverria announced the formation of the institute based on the recommendation of the Student Success Task Force and several other entities on campus. The institute combines a previous mentoring program with an existing faculty mentoring program.

“This institute is designed to increase and improve faculty-student interaction, increase the likelihood that a student will graduate and increase student satisfaction with their university experience,” said Echeverria.

The Mentoring Institute will match first year freshmen, new transfer students, new re-entry students and students deemed at risk with a trained mentor to increase their likelihood of success and increase the number of students completing their college education.

Dr. Albert Valencia, an associate professor in the Counseling, Special Education and Rehabilitation Department, will serve as the director.

Recruiting and training of faculty, staff and student mentors is under way and will be coordinated with a new electronic program that will contact all freshmen on a regular basis for their first 14 months on campus.  That program will begin rolling out in fall 2005 term.

This summer, new freshmen students will be invited to participate in the Mentoring Institute, will be invited to participate in a virtual or electronic community with other students and begin receiving periodic messages designed to increase their engagement in the academic life of the university.
