Summer Arts celebrates the blues on KVPT July 7

The spotlight will be on the blues Thursday, July 7, when three outstanding bands take the stage at the historic Tower Theatre in Fresno for a free concert televised live on KVPT Valley Public Television as part of the CSU Summer Arts in collaboration with California State University, Fresno’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.

The concert, open to the public, is from 9:30 to 11 p.m. The three bands featured will be Steve Ono and Eddie Gordon, Three Guys Playin' the Blues and The Mofo Party Band

The concert and television show are the culmination of the CSU Summer Arts Program’s Live Television Production course, coordinated by veteran Hollywood television director Howard Ritter and taught by an elite group of professionals with years of experience in live TV production.

The 20 students enrolled in the course will handle all of the functions of the broadcast including, cameras, lighting, staging and sound.

The program is being produced by Don Priest, chair of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Fresno State. Mobil facilities for the broadcast are being provided by Comcast Cable and broadcast facilities and air time provided by Valley Public Television.

Paula Castadio, KVPT president and chief executive officer, believes this type of collaboration is exactly what public television is all about.

“It’s great to be able to partner with Fresno State, CSU Summer Arts and Comcast in a broadcast of this kind.  Students are receiving first hand experience, Summer Arts is providing a new experience and our KVPT audience gets the benefit of a first class blues concert, win, win, win.”

The concert is free to all on a first-come basis at the Tower Theatre, Olive and Wishon in Fresno.  Doors open at 8:45 pm. Broadcast time is 9:30 to 11 p.m. on Valley Public Television.
