Arne Nixon Center plans Leo Politi tour of Los Angeles

Cover of "Pedro, the Angel of Olvera Street"The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Fresno State will host a Leo Politi bus tour of Los Angeles May 16-17, 2006.

Plans include walking tours of Olvera Street and China Town (including a visit to Mr. Fong’s shop); talks by Leo Politi’s children, Paul Politi and Suzanne Bischof; a presentation by Ann Stalcup, author of “Leo Politi: Artist of the Angels;” and a tour of the Los Angeles Public Library.

The cost will be approximately $300 per person, based on double occupancy. This includes transportation, a hotel room for one night and most meals. Single rooms will be available for an additional fee.

Fresno native Leo Politi (1908-1996) wrote and illustrated 18 children’s books. His works often celebrated cultural diversity, and many were published in both English and Spanish. His picture book, “Song of the Swallows,” about the San Juan Capistrano mission, won the 1950 American Library Association's Caldecott medal, the highest honor a children's book illustrator can win.

Politi, born to an Italian family, moved to Italy with his family as a child and attended art school there. Returning to the U.S. in the 1930s, he settled in Los Angeles, where he wrote and illustrated children's books set in the city's multicultural neighborhoods – Olvera Street, Chinatown and Little Tokyo (also known as Japan Town).

In 1974, the Leo Politi Branch of the Fresno County Public Library was dedicated. Politi visited Fresno frequently to speak at festivals organized by his dear friend Arne Nixon. The Arne Nixon Center at Fresno State now houses a major collection of Politi books and original art.
