Speakers to discuss being Latino in post-9/11 America

MTV award-winning director Sergio Arau and acclaimed actress Yareli Arizmendi will be featured Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the University Lecture Series at California State University, Fresno.

Arau and Arizmendi will speak on “Making the Invisible Visible: The Task of the Artist” at 7:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union, 5280 N. Jackson Ave.

Arau and Arizmendi are a husband and wife duo and co-creators of “A Day Without a Mexican,” a politically charged masterpiece of wit, irreverence and social commentary. It not only illustrates the impact of Mexican and Mexican-Americans on California’s economy, but highlights the growing cultural presence and power of Latinos in America. Arau’s and Arizmendi’s multimedia lecture event explores topical news items with a Latino point of view. Their commentary dissects what it means to be Latino in post-9/11 America.

The lecture is being held in conjunction with the first campus-community diversity conference, “Culture and Community Building: Transformative Practices,” sponsored by the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute. As part of the conference, a free showing of “A Day Without a Mexican” will be shown on Monday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in the University Center, room 200.

The University Lecture Series is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the University Student Union, Associated Students, Coke and James Hallowell, KJWL, Borders and Piccadilly Inn Hotels.

Advance tickets are available at the University Student Union Information Desk and at Borders. Tickets are $10 general admission; $6 Fresno State faculty, staff, Alumni Association members and seniors; $5 elementary and secondary students; and $2 Fresno State students. Prices on the day of the event increase by $2 for general admission, faculty, staff and Alumni Association members.

For information or tickets, contact the University Lecture Series office at 559.278.2341
