Richard Houghten, founder and president of a medical research institute, will receive California State University, Fresno’s Distinguished Alumnus Award at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala on Thursday, Oct. 13.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor given by the Fresno State Alumni Association.

About 500 are expected to attend the Top Dog event, which will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Save Mart Center. Tickets are sold out.

The Arthur Safstrom Service Award will be presented to Bud and Jan Richter, longtime supporters of the university.  The Safstrom award honors those who have contributed extraordinary service to the university or the alumni association.

The 2005 Outstanding Alumni Award also will be presented to nine alumni — one from each of the eight academic school/colleges and the Division of Student Affairs.

The outstanding alumni this year are Helda Pinzon-Perez, Ray Steele Jr., Mathias Franklin Matoian, Hugo Kevorkian, Wendell Bell, Thomas Downing, Bruce Bronzan, Jim Gomes and the Sons of the San Joaquin.

They will be honored for making a difference in their community and in their profession.

University President John D. Welty and John Gomes, president of the Fresno State Alumni Association, will present the awards along with the deans from each of the colleges and schools and the vice president of Student Affairs.

Welty said he is “proud to share in the success of many of our students who have moved on to accomplished careers as authors, politicians, artists, educators, business leaders, athletes, engineers, scientists and health-care providers.”

“This success reflects and inspires each individual who received his or her education at Fresno State,” Welty said. “As our noted alumni, they are our finest ambassadors, leaders and role models for our students and for our society at large.”

The Alumni Association has been honoring a distinguished alumnus since 1952 when Robert Greelis, Class of ’39, was the first honoree. In 1994, the association established the individual college/school outstanding alumni awards.

Other recipients of the top alumni honor have included U.S. Secretary of Treasury Paul O'Neill; California Secretary of State Bill Jones; the late journalist H. Roger Tatarian, former Houston Mayor Lee “Pat” Brown; the late Sen. Ken Maddy; the late legendary coach and educator Cornelius A. “Dutch” Warmerdam; and former U.S. Ambassador Philip Sanchez as well as numerous local leaders.

Houghten is internationally recognized as an expert in the fields of molecular diversity combinatorial chemistry and peptide chemistry. He received his bachelor of science in chemistry from Fresno State in 1968, and his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of California Berkeley in 1975.

In 1985, Houghten founded his first company, Multiple Peptide Systems, to commercially synthesize peptides for the research community. He founded Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies in 1988, a not-for-profit research center dedicated to the discovery of treatments for a number of devastating diseases, including Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, many types of cancer and AIDS.

He most recently founded Mixture Sciences, Inc. a company focused on the discovery of therapeutic and diagnostic candidates using its proprietary mixture-based peptide, peptidomimetic and small molecule combinatorial technologies.

Houghten has received various awards acknowledging his contributions to the fields of combinatorial chemistry, peptide chemistry and basic research, including the 1996 San Diego Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Chemical Society and the first Athena Individual Pinnacle Award in 1999 for Empowering and Promoting Women.

Houghten has authored or coauthored more than 450 scientific publications and is responsible for inventions which have resulted in 58 issued patents. Houghten founded the journal Peptide Research, now called, The Journal of Peptide Research (the official journal of the American Peptide Society), and is co-editor-in-chief of the journal Molecular Diversity.

He was co-chair of the 2nd International Peptide Symposium in San Diego in 2001, and has served both as the Secretary and Treasurer of the American Peptide Society. He has recently been asked by President John Welty to participate in Fresno State’s Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program later this fall.

Master of Ceremonies for this year’s Top Dog gala will be the Hon. Robert Oliver, Fresno County Superior Court judge, who is a 1966 Fresno State graduate.

Tickets are $85 per person, $850 for a table of ten, $1,000 sponsorship (includes a table of eight with two seats for student scholarship recipients) but are sold out. The event includes complimentary parking and is black-tie optional.
