2006 Common Threads Honorees to be Recognized at Special 10th Anniversary Celebration

Five remarkable women representing Fresno, Kings, Madera, Merced and Tulare counties have been selected as the 2006 honorees for the Common Threads Award which recognizes women from the San Joaquin Valley for their agricultural, philanthropic and community service.

The Common Threads Award recipients are: Barbara Chrisman, Visalia; Gay Hooper, Hanford; Milenda Meders, Chowchilla; Sue Safargian, Kingsburg; and Patricia Wickstrom, Hilmar. These five Valley women have strong agricultural backgrounds and are active participants in their counties through philanthropic endeavors and community service.

New this year in celebration of Common Threads’ 10th anniversary, a special honor entitled the Tapestry Award will be given out for the first time to Carol Chandler who not only embodies the qualities of our Common Thread recipients, but is also a founding member of Common Threads. The bountiful giving of her time, talent and treasure to the Central Valley are woven like a tapestry for all to enjoy.

The honorees will be recognized at a special luncheon on Friday, April 7, 2006 at the Satellite Student Union at California State University, Fresno. An educational workshop on planned giving and philanthropy will kick off the morning’s events in the University Business Center at 9:00 a.m. with special guest speaker, Jane Yow, a Training and Organization Development Consultant, who will be sharing her observations of generational giving. The tenth annual Common Threads luncheon will begin at 11:15 a.m. and will feature award-winning Fresno State wines, a raffle and the Common Threads Award presentation. Tickets are $30 and net proceeds raised from the luncheon go to the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation (Ag Leadership), Ag One Foundation and charities of the honorees’ choice.

For ticket information or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Amy Christensen at Ag Leadership, 916-928-2249; or Christy Melvold at Ag One, 559-278-4266.

Common Threads is a collaborative effort of Ag Leadership, California State University, Fresno’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, and the Fresno State’s Ag One Foundation. The program was designed to recognize the Valley’s many women committed to making a difference. Each year Common Threads honors women in agriculture who have made positive differences in their communities with their philanthropic giving.
