New Employee Assistance director joins Fresno State staff

Dr. Nancy A. Petenbrink has joined the California State University, Fresno staff as the new director of Employee Assistance and Development.

Petenbrink, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional, comes from Florida International University where she is credited with initiating and building their employee assistance program. Previously she was the president of her own company providing employee assistance services to a variety of corporations and agencies, including the city of West Hollywood, the State Bar Association in Los Angeles and Chevron in Bakersfield. She also administered employee assistance services and other workplace productivity programs with Anheuser-Busch Companies in Los Angeles.

Her familiarity with the Valley dates back to the early 1980s when she worked as the Employee Assistance Program coordinator at Kernview Mental Health Center in Bakersfield.

Petenbrink holds a bachelor of science degree in education, elementary and special education, a master of education in guidance and counseling; and a Ph.D in human behavior (concentration in organizational behavior) from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

The Employee Assistance and Development (EA&D) office is a Fresno State effort to maintain and enhance the health, well-being and performance of its employees. In recognition of the impact of human problems in the workplace, EA&D services are dedicated to strengthening the university’s educational mission through the provision of professional help for employees’ personal and work-affecting concerns, in a manner stressing prevention, self-initiative and confidentiality.

The program provides assessment and referral, problem resolution sessions, and mediation and conflict resolution services. The program also offers supervisory consultation and training, and coordinates on-campus professional development and wellness programs.

Petenbrink replaces Dr. John Franz, who held the post for 20 years. Franz returned to teaching in the Social Work Education Department last fall.
