Science education coordinator James Marshall wins 2006 President's Award of Excellence

Education faculty member Dr. James E. Marshall, who specializes in  preparing science teachers, has been presented the President's Award of Excellence for 2006 at California State University, Fresno.

Marshall, who joined the faculty in 1990, is professor and chair in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He serves as coordinator of science education programs and as the director of the Central Valley Science Project.

Fresno business leader Hugo Morales, chairman of the University Advisory Board, announced the award Thursday (Jan. 12) at the 2006 Faculty and Staff Spring Assembly. The recognition includes a $10,000 award. The selection is made by the University Advisory Board, which is composed of community leaders.

The President's Award of Excellence seeks to recognize a faculty or staff member who demonstrates integrity, leadership, and a commitment to the university and community as exemplified by Fresno State President John D. Welty. Previous winners include Dr. Stephen A. Rodemeyer, chemistry professor and director of the Smittcamp  Family Honors College, classics professor Dr. Victor Davis Hanson and health researcher Dr. Kathleen Curtis.

Marshall teaches science methods courses and works extensively in providing professional development opportunities and courses for K-12 science teachers. He teaches curriculum courses in the Fresno States Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership and serves on numerous dissertation committees.

Dr. Paul Beare, dean of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development, nominated Marshall, noting he is an outstanding teacher and scholarwho is devoted to community service.

Marshall serves on the board of the National Science Education Leadership Association and is a member of the board of directors of the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust. He is past editor of the Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities and past president of the Central California Science 
Education Leadership Association.

He has made numerous professional presentations to state, national and international audiences and has published the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, School Science and Mathematics, Science and Children, and Journal of Science Teacher Education.

Prior to joining the Fresno State faculty, Marshall worked as a field biologist for the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission and taught science at the elementary and high school levels. He holds a bachelors degree in wildlife ecology from the University of Florida. His graduate work at the University of South Florida includes a masters degree in biology and a Ph.D. in science education.
