First Hispanic Youth Symposium in western U.S. to be announced at Fresno State

Tuesday (Feb. 28) – 11 a.m.:

Officials from the Hispanic College Fund based in Washington D.C., will be at California State University, Fresno on Tuesday to announce the first Hispanic Youth Symposium in the western United States.

WHAT:

Announcement: of Fresno Hispanic Youth Symposium this summer at Fresno State

WHEN:

Tuesday - Feb. 28, 2006            11-11:30 a.m.  

WHERE:

Cesar E. Chavez Monument -- Fresno State Peace Garden
(In the event of rain: Gottschalk Gallery, University Business Ctr., Peters Business Bldg).

WHO:

  • George Cushman, exec. director - Hispanic Youth Symposium, Washington D.C.

  • Dr. John D. Welty, Fresno State president and honorary co-chair

  • Theresa Speake, director of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Economic Impact and Diversity (major sponsor) and Fresno State alumnus

Also present will be:

Edwin Luevanos and Jim Oftedal, planning committee co-chairs
Dr. Paul Oliaro, vice president for student affairs and dean of students
Frances Pena, director - Fresno State’s University Outreach Services. 

INFO:

Set for Aug. 4-6, the symposium will host more than 150 Central California high school students (Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Madera counties) with multi-faceted workshops, seminars, networking and mentoring opportunities focusing on building an infrastructure for future success. Fresno State’s symposium will be the third in the nation (Baltimore and Virginia) and the first in the western U.S. Theme: Raíces y Alas (Roots and Wings).
