Fresno State artists, performers take the stage for Rogue Festival

Dozens of artists, writers and performers from California State University, Fresno will be taking part in the fifth annual Rogue Performance Festival, March 2-11, in the Tower District and downtown Fresno.

The Rogue is a non-juried arts festival that celebrates the work independent artists. The celebration is made up of theater, music, dance, film, performance art, spoken word, visual arts and more. The festival is modeled after similar fringe festivals held worldwide.

Among the many Rogue shows that have ties to the university are:

The Crossroads of Gypsy Blues and Cowboy Jazz, by Acoustic Highway
The trio of Joanne Calhoun (Fresno State graduate, Industrial Technology/Interior Design, 1992), Rick Calhoun and Jim Rust, also known as Acoustic Highway, performs an original blend of Americana that runs the gambit of jazz, rock, western, blues and folk sounds.

The Ill-Advised Solo Show, by Blake Jones and Whispermaphone Productions
The show of Blake Jones (Music, 1985) this year may be ill-advised not for its simplicity but for its subtitle: "Why Aren't American Christianity and the Left The Best Buddies They Should Be?"

Original, Object and Figurative Expressionism, by Aileen R. Imperatrice
Aileen Imperatrice (Commercial Arts/Advertising Design, 1992) will for the third year feature live Rogue performances along with an exhibition of visual art from multiple artists in her Ashtree Studio.

Poetry and Prose from Fresno State, by the San Joaquin Literary Association
Performing their spoken-word readings will be 13 members of the SJLA, many of whom are current graduate students in the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing.

Sanitized for Your Protection, by Jaguar Bennett and Nicotine Productions
Jaguar Bennett (Philosophy, 1992) promotes his stand-up comedy as including "blasphemy, obscenity and Polysorbate 80."

The Sirens' Song for the Recovering Alcoholic, by Songs 4 Pints
Performing their musical act will be Russell Noland and Deric McQueen, also known as Songs 4 Pints. Noland is a current communication major and McQueen is studying history.

Symbiosis, by the Fresno State New Music Ensemble
The Fresno State New Music Ensemble’s show features new musical works composed by current music composition students.
