The College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno, will participate in the National Engineers Week 2006 Feb. 19-25, including its annual Engineers at the Mall at Fresno Fashion Fair on Feb. 25 and 26.

Other activities include an open house for the College of Engineering on Feb. 22 and public seminars on engineering and medicine as well as entrepreneurship. This year’s exhibit also will feature the 2005 Human Powered Vehicle, the Formula One car, the Concrete Canoe and the BulldogBot along with student projects on display.

Engineers Week, a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to quality of life.

“Among the significant benefits of our profession is the knowledge that, as engineers, we have a chance to enhance lives every day,” stated Dr. Ronald D. Sugar, Chairman, chief executive officer and president of Northrop Grumman Corporation, who is one of the national co chairs of National Engineers Week.

“Through ‘Connecting Educators to Engineering’ — this year’s Engineers Week initiative — we have a unique opportunity to help make the next generation of engineers aware of the rewards of our field,” Sugar said. “In the process, we can help improve our profession’s prospects and students’ futures. To do so, we must expand our outreach beyond high school and college; to ensure students are developing the appropriate math and science skills, we must reach them during the middle-school years, as well. I join the Society of Women Engineers in encouraging you to offer your support to schools as an engineering resource.”

Dr. Andrew Hoff interim dean of Fresno State’s College of Engineer said the observance helps bring public attention to the academic mission of the college.

“Ultimately, it helps promote recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and technology literacy, and motivates youths to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse, vigorous and informed engineering workforce,” Hoff said.

The festivities begin Feb. 20 with the opening of a month-long exhibit at the Fresno County Library’s main branch located at 2420 Mariposa St. in downtown Fresno. The exhibit will run to March 21.
