The United States Bowling Congress has selected Glenn Carlson, head coach of the intercollegiate bowling program at California State University, Fresno, to receive Kerm Helmer Horizon Award in recognition of his efforts to expand opportunities for young bowlers.

Since founding Fresno State’s bowling program 36 years ago, Carlson has helped develop individual athletes as well as program opportunities, such as athletic scholarships for bowlers. Under Carlson’s leadership, Fresno State has recorded 12 national championship appearances for its women’s team, six national championship appearances for its men’s team and produced 25 All-Americans. Carlson is certified as a USBC Silver level coach.

“Through his many years of dedicated service with the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) program, Glenn helped expose our sport to collegians across the country,” said Kim Terrell, a former professional bowler and spokesperson for the USBC Collegiate program.

A formal presentation of the award will be made during the USBC Convention in Orlando, Fla., next month.

The Kerm Helmer Horizon Award recognizes leaders in the bowling community who display the courage, determination and ability to develop far-reaching programs of national scope that provide fun and exciting opportunities for bowlers. The award is named in honor of the late Kerm Helmer, the team founder and longtime bowling coach at Erie Community College who also served as a board member, vice-president and president of the Young American Bowling Alliance.

The United States Bowling Congress, as the national governing body, ensures the integrity and protects the future of the sport, provides programs and services and enhances the bowling experience. USBC officially was launched Jan. 1, 2005, as an organization serving nearly 3 million adult and youth bowlers in the United States. It resulted from the merger of the American Bowling Congress, Women’s International Bowling Congress, Young American Bowling Alliance and USA Bowling.
