The 18th annual Hmong Education Conference will be held Saturday, March 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union at California State University, Fresno.

This year’s theme, “Build Your Life Around Your Vision,” will feature Dr. Sa Vang, a graduate from the University of California, Davis Medical School.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by University Outreach Services and the Fresno State Hmong Student Association.

Organizers expect about 500 Hmong students and parents to attend the event that has become one of the largest Hmong conferences in the state drawing attendees from all over the Central Valley, said Phong Yang, counselor in University Outreach Services.

The conference’s mission is outreach and information, while creating a network of support among students, parents and professionals in the community, Yang said.

Workshops will cover topics such as career counseling, student finance and student/parent communication.

Dr. Sa Vang is a first generation Hmong woman who comes from a large family of 10 children, Yang said.

“She was married at the age of 16 but managed to get a higher education and help blaze the career trail for Hmong women,” he said.

Students and parents can register on site for the conference. For more information, contact Yang at 559.278.2048.
