First international student elected AS president at Fresno State

Juan Pablo Moncayo, an international student from Ecuador, defeated two opponents to win the Associated Students (AS) presidency in voting this week at California State University, Fresno.

Moncayo, a senior majoring in finance and physics, is believed to be the first international student to become president at Fresno State. He is the current AS executive vice president.

“Serving in Associated Students gives students the chance to address issues at various levels and work with campus administrators, professors and supporters to make the student voice heard,” Moncayo said. “I am proud that I have another opportunity to be a part of that.”

As EVP, Moncayo voiced concerns regarding the University High School’s location on the Fresno State campus and informed faculty and staff about the importance of “bargain shopping” for textbooks. He spent more than eight months on a committee reviewing parking operations to provide recommendations on improvements without dramatically increasing prices for students. He also advocated the need for more quiet study spaces on campus.

Moncayo was born in Quito, Ecuador, and at age 6 moved with his family to Los Angeles for six years before returning to his homeland. He came to Fresno State in 2002. He was first introduced to the university when Carol Munshower, former director of International Student Services and Programs, met with him during a recruitment trip she made to Ecuador.

“One of the main reasons I came here is because I had the opportunity to meet Carol,” Moncayo said. “Fresno State has an excellent international student program. I am fortunate enough to be a part of it.”

Also in the election, students voted down two referendums that would have increased student fees by $40 per semester.

Approximately 1,400 students voted in this year’s election. Gary Nelson, AS adviser, said that the turnout is about the same as last year’s.
