Immigration Debate April 26 at Fresno State addresses financial aid for undocumented students

A debate between two Fresno State students on California SB 160, which would allow undocumented immigrant students to receive state financial aid, is scheduled Wednesday, April 26, at California State University, Fresno as part of the 2006 Law Day Conference.

Vianey Nunez and Tal Eslick will debate the issue in the Free Speech Area from 12:30 to 1:25 p.m.  Dr. Yishaiya Abosch, a political science professor, will moderate the debate, which will be followed by a question-and-answer period.

The debate is free and open to the public. The Free Speech Area is west of the University Student Union next to the Peace Garden.

Sponsors are the Fresno State Political Science Association, the Political Science Department, and the College of Social Sciences in coordination with Law Day sponsors Chicanos in Law, a student club.

Nunez, senior women’s studies major, will give the pro argument. She is speaker pro tem of the Associated Students and a member of Chicanos In Law.

Eslick, a senior political science major who will represent the con argument, is president of the College Republicans, also a recognized student organization.

Maria Hernandez, director of financial aid at Fresno State, will precede the debate with an informational presentation outlining the current state of financial aid and the impact of SB 160 if it is adopted.  

Dr. Carlos Perez, chair of the Chicano and Latino Studies Department, will provide a brief discussion on the history of immigration in the United States.

The Political Science Association is a university-recognized nonpartisan student organization devoted to encouraging civic engagement among college students.

California Senate DIGEST – SB 160
California Senate Bill 160 requests the University of California and requires the California State University, and the California Community Colleges (CCCs) to establish procedures and forms to enable students who are exempt from paying nonresident tuition, as specified, to participate in all student aid programs administered by these segments and by the State of California to the fullest extent permitted by, and consistent with, federal law.  This bill also provides that persons exempt from paying nonresident tuition, as specified, who otherwise are qualified, shall receive a CCCs' Board of Governors fee waiver.
