Women's film festival set for Nov. 3

Lunafest, a festival of short films created by, for and about women, will return Nov. 3 to California State University, Fresno. Proceeds will benefit The Breast Cancer Fund and the Fresno State Women’s Resource Center.

Now in its sixth year nationally, Lunafest is coming to Fresno for a fourth time. It will travel to more than 60 other locations throughout the country this year. The festival is sponsored by Lunabar. The primary co-sponsor is the Women's Resource Center at Fresno State, which provides services to enhance the learning and working experiences of women in the university community.

Lunafest will feature nine films this year. Among them are the following:

“Mann Ke Manjeere,” which portrays a singer’s journey of surviving domestic violence. The story was inspired by the life of a young Muslim woman who was born into a well-to-do family. The young woman fell in love, and much against the wishes of her family married the man of her choice.

“Plum Flower” takes place in 1948 in China, which was a time when female infanticide was a normal occurrence for poor rural communities. The film concerns a mother and father facing a staggering moral choice when they have a fifth daughter. It is based on the true story of the filmmaker’s family.

“Dear Talula” features director and producer Lori Benson, and her true story about being diagnosed with breast cancer just 14 months after the birth of her daughter, Talula. The profound experience makes the filmmaker confront her own mortality and ultimately strengthens her connection to her true self.

The Women’s Resource Center provides internships and volunteer opportunities, support and discussion groups on a variety of issues, and peer counseling and referral services to women who are coping with personal transitions, crises or any other life experiences for which they need non-judgmental guidance and support.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union. Advance tickets are $8 for students and $10 general. Tickets purchased at the door will be $10 for students and $12 general.
