 Los
Niños Holiday Festival, the Fresno State Chicano Alumni’s annual event
promoting literacy in the family with Christmas stories read to
children, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Arte
Américas (1630 Van Ness Ave.) in downtown Fresno.
The featured storyteller is Ben Romero of Fresno, whose new book,
“Chicken Beaks Revisited: An Hispanic Adolescence,” describes growing up
Hispanic in New Mexico during the late 1950s and early ’60s.
Sponsored by the Fresno State Chicano Alumni, the festival treats
children from foster-care agencies to a day of holiday fun, said Josie
Rangel, a California State University, Fresno health services counselor
and member of the Chicano Alumni Board of Directors.
Books are provided by ReadFresno and Wal-Mart. Food and treats for the
event are donated by Javier’s Mexican Restaurant, Invision Graphics and
Design and Save Mart Supermarkets. Donations were also made by the
Association of Mexican-American Educators and Aetna.
“Each child takes home a book or two, a picture posed with Santa Claus,
piñata candy, and enjoys a tasty burrito lunch,” Rangel said. “Alumni
are invited to donate books and join us in reading in small groups to
the children.”
