Los Niños Holiday Festival on Dec. 9 spotlights author Ben Romero, literacy

Los Niños Holiday Festival, the Fresno State Chicano Alumni’s annual event promoting literacy in the family with Christmas stories read to children, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Arte Américas (1630 Van Ness Ave.) in downtown Fresno.

The featured storyteller is Ben Romero of Fresno, whose new book, “Chicken Beaks Revisited: An Hispanic Adolescence,” describes growing up Hispanic in New Mexico during the late 1950s and early ’60s.

Sponsored by the Fresno State Chicano Alumni, the festival treats children from foster-care agencies to a day of holiday fun, said Josie Rangel, a California State University, Fresno health services counselor and member of the Chicano Alumni Board of Directors.

Books are provided by ReadFresno and Wal-Mart. Food and treats for the event are donated by Javier’s Mexican Restaurant, Invision Graphics and Design and Save Mart Supermarkets. Donations were also made by the Association of Mexican-American Educators and Aetna.

“Each child takes home a book or two, a picture posed with Santa Claus, piñata candy, and enjoys a tasty burrito lunch,” Rangel said. “Alumni are invited to donate books and join us in reading in small groups to the children.”

For more information, contact Rangel at josie_rangle@csufresno.edu or Chicano Alumni President Manuel Olgin at 559.871-8463.
