African Peoples History Month events

African Peoples History Month gets under way today (Feb. 1) at California State University, Fresno with opening ceremonies at noon at the Free Speech Area platform.

History professor Dr. Malik Simba will be the guest speaker. The program also will include songs by Fresno State students and “Stepping” by members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Also scheduled during the month are the Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Residence Dining Facility. On Feb. 2 and 23 is the African American Student Recruitment Conference. Keynote speaker on Feb. 2 is Dwayne Ferguson, founder and president of BlackXchange.net, one of the fastest growing Black Business Directories online. His topic is “The Power of Education.”
 

Other events are Feb. 2, Cineculture: Racial Profiling Forum, at 5:15 p.m. in the Industrial Technology Building room 101; Feb. 16, Africana Culture Night at 6 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union; and Feb. 25, College Gospel Celebration at 6 p.m. at Saints Rest Baptist Church.

All events are open to the public.

Events are co-sponsored African Peoples History Month Committee, Africana & American Indian Studies, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute, College of Social Sciences, Division of Student Affairs and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
