New York Times columnist to visit Fresno State

New York Times journalist David Gonzalez, who in the 1990s was listed as one of the nation's 100 most influential Hispanics by the Hispanic Business Magazine, will visit California State University, Fresno on April 11.

Gonzalez, who will address the importance of civic engagement and community involvement, will speak from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center located in the Student Recreation Center (at the corner of Shaw and Woodrow avenues). The event, which is sponsored by Associated Students, Inc. and is part of their campus readership program, is free of charge and open to Fresno State students and the community.

Gonzalez joined the New York Times in September 1990 and has served in several roles including the Bronx bureau chief, Caribbean and Central America bureau chief, Metro religion reporter and also as a general assignment reporter. He also teaches community reporting at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he has been a frequent guest lecturer.

Before beginning a career in journalism, Gonzalez worked for several non-profit agencies active in New York City's Latino and African-American communities. He was also the project coordinator at En Foco, a Bronx-based arts group that supports emerging Latino photographers. Prior to working for The Times, he worked for Newsweek from 1983 until 1990, serving as a correspondent in New York, Detroit and Miami.
