Fresno State offers scholarships to 3 Science Fair winners

Students from Sanger and Immanuel high schools who had winning projects at the 54th annual Central California Regional Science, Mathematics and Engineering Fair on March 22 have been offered scholarships for $2,000 to attend California State University, Fresno when they finish high school.

The scholarship offers were made by university President John D. Welty. The university has made such offers to Science Fair winners for the past two decades. The students were selected for their excellence in hypothesis testing, independence, innovation and possessing a greater understanding of the significance of their projects relative to known information.

The students and their projects are:

  • Lacey Benefiel (Sanger High School), whose project was titled “Lethal concentrations of environmentally friendly Jalapeno pesticides.

  • Darrick Gowens (Immanuel), “Effectiveness of different type of wood ashes as a fertilizer on the germination and growth rate of radish seed.”

  • Barbara Shinaver (Sanger), “The effect of herbal teas on the ability of Drosophila melanogaster to withstand environmental stress.”

In addition, the Biology Department awarded textbooks as prizes to outstanding efforts in the biological sciences to the following students:

Adam Nitido, Brian Spain, Joe Kummerfeld, William Winn (Buchanan High School); Alexander Guzetta, Stephen Sasaki (Center for Advanced Research and Technology); Charlene Kaloki, Cindy Wong, Lauren Kato, Miriam Ahmad, Pallavi Vishwanath, Saisindhu Narala, Samantha Baxter, Sonia Singh, Vinay Tripuraneni (Clovis West); Frank Horan, Jenny Rempel (Edison High School); Darrick Gowens (Immanuel); Barbara Shinaver, Lacey Benefiel (Sanger).
