Sounds of music fill campus in April

The Music Department at California State University, Fresno, will host concerts, workshops and other events in April that appeal to a broad variety of musical interests and are open to the entire community.

April 1 - Organist David Higgs will be hosted by the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series and San Joaquin Valley Chapter of American Guild of Organists at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall. He will play works by Buxtehude, Pachelbel, Kittel, J.S. Bach, Lefébure-Wely, Daquin, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Tickets: $12.50, general; $7, seniors; and $5, students. Reservations are encouraged.

April 11 – Orpheus “Rare Gems" concert will be at 8 p.m. in Wahlberg Recital Hall. It feature faculty members guitarist Corey Whitehead and saxophonist Alan Durst, who will give the world premiere of Paraskevas' "A Night with the Aristocrats," written specially for the guitar, saxophone duo. Compositions by Henry Purcell, Antonin Dvorak and faculty member Benjamin Boone will complete the program. Admission is free.

April 12 - Guitarist Mike Taylor will perform with jazz bands "A" and "B" at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Tickets: $12, general; $8 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 12 - Oboist Dr. Krista Riggs, who is a new faculty member at Fresno State, will perform oboe and English horn music from Baroque to contemporary eras at 8 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. The performance will include works from Australia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, France, Italy and Germany. Admission is free.

April 13 - The Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert Series, in coordination with the Fresno Chamber Music Festival,” will host “Piano and Winds” at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The event will feature works by Mozart, Beethoven, Thuille and Poulenc. Tickets: $12.50, general; $7, seniors; and $5, students. Reservations are encouraged.

April 13 - Guitarist David Schramm and Joseph Vaughn Williams will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets: $12, general; $8 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 14 - The Guitar Chamber Music recital, which will feature guitar, quartet and ensembles, will be held in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. The time is to be announced. Tickets: $12, general; $8 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 15 - The Guitar Panorama, which will feature Fresno Flamenco Artists, will be held at 3 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets: $12, general; $8 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 21-22 - Fresno State’s opera workshop, which will feature acts from "Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters" and "Gianni Schicchi,” will be held in the Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. on April 21 and 3 p.m. on April 22. Tickets: $10, general; $8, faculty and staff; and $5, seniors and students.

April 22 - Fresno State piano majors will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets: $5, general; and $2, students.

April 23 - The Clendenin Brass Quintet will present the final concert of the year at 7:30 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets are $5.

April 25 - The Contemporary Music Ensemble will perform a program of new compositions, featuring works by composer and violinist David H. Johnson., at 7 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets: $6, general; and $5 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 25 - The Percussion Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Tickets: $6, general; and $5 faculty, staff; $4, seniors and students.

April 26 - A faculty performance with trumpeter Dr. Michael Caldwell and award-winning Seattle composer and pianist David Paul Mesler will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The concert will include audience participation to guide the direction of this performance, which will feature primarily improvised music. Tickets: Tickets: $6, general; and $5 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 26 - The Oboe Studio Recital, which will feature solo and chamber music by Fresno State students, will take place at 8 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Admission is free.

April 29 - The Gospel Choir will perform at 4 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Tickets are $7.

April 29 - The President's Quintet will perform chamber music at 7 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall. Tickets: $5, general; and $2 faculty, staff, seniors and students.

April 30 – The Student Composers Recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Wahlberg Recital Hall and will feature works by student composition majors. Tickets: $6, general; and $5 faculty, staff, seniors and students.
