Cinco de Mayo observance

Semana De La Raza, the annual weeklong observance of Cinco de Mayo at California State University, Fresno, begins today with an event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Free Speech Area.

Semana de la Raza has been hosted by the Fresno State student organization Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A) for more than 30 years.

A rally on recent immigration raids will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. and a panel on immigration and NAFTA will be held Thursday all day beginning at 8 a.m., hosted by the Chicano/Latino Studies Program.

Other Cinco de Mayo activities this week include a roaming dancers performance by Fresno State’s Los Danzantes de Aztlan from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. at the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Cinco De Mayo Fest in Old Town Clovis on Saturday, May 5, at the Chukchansi Stage.

The activity schedule is:

Monday, April 30 -- “P***ed off Student Campaign” 11 a.m. -2 p.m. includes student survey (Free Speech Area); 6 p.m. - Movie: “Friday” (McLane Hall, Room 229).

Tuesday, May 1 -- “Migration is a Human Right: Has anyone raided your house lately? Why all the Raids?” 11 a.m. -2 p.m. - Rally (Free Speech Area); 3 - 8 p.m. - Rally (Fulton Mall - downtown Fresno).

Wednesday, May 2 -- Dia De La Mujer “Die-in Demonstration” Noon - 2 p.m. (Free Speech Area); 6 p.m. Movie: “Maria Full of Grace” (McLane Hall, Room 229).

Thursday, May -- Dia del Inmigrante – All-day event. 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. - N.A.F.T.A. Immigration Policy Panel (Satellite Student Union) hosted by the CLAS Dept. & Immigration Committee; 6 p.m. - Movie “El Norte” (Satellite Student Union).
