The Homecoming and Family Weekend 2007 at Fresno State has been set for the Oct. 20 Bulldogs football game vs. San Jose State, as part of Oct. 15-20 Homecoming Week activities.

The university’s alumni and community friends are encouraged to make plans to join students, staff and faculty at the annual celebration.

Among the many events that occur during Homecoming Week is the Oct. 18 Top Dog Awards Gala, presented by the Fresno State Alumni Association. It will be held at the Save Mart Center. Ticket information is available at 559.278.2586.

Revival of the traditional Fresno State Homecoming Parade is in the works this year and a Bulldog pep rally is planned. An information workshop for alumni dependents on admission to the university also will be offered.

Traditional events include mini-bike races, Bulldog-spirit decorating contests for university offices and student booths, a breakfast presented by the Parents Association, Bulldog Boulevard and other student events throughout the week.

“My service in Jumpstart has had an extraordinary impact on me as an educator and citizen serving those who are underprivileged,” said Gomes. “I have grown

very passionate about the need to provide resources and services to families and children who are at a disadvantage.

“As a member of Jumpstart, I have had the amazing opportunity to serve disadvantaged young children and their families in my community,” she said.

Comes was selected from Jumpstart’s national network of 3,000 college students

and received the award following a thorough application and review process. The

selection process consisted of a review from a VIP Selection Committee, as well

as an online voting competition on AE’s website. Nearly 13,000 individuals participated in the online voting.

The other four national winners are Matt Andereck of DePaul University, Elizabeth Bauer of Tufts University, Lara Goetsch of University of Wisconsin —Eau Claire and Shari Kurtzman of Suffolk University.

“Developing a program that recognizes the significant impact these college

students have on young children has been extremely rewarding,” stated Susan

McGalla, President, AE. “By profiling their amazing stories at AE, it is our hope

that young people across the country will be inspired to serve their communities

and aspire to find a college experience that brings them joy along with personal and professional development.”

About the AE Spirit of Serivce Awards selection process

The Selection Committee for the 2006-2007 AE Spirit of Service Awards reviewed Jumpstart Corps members’ applications and letters of recommendations and assessed them on the following characteristics: demonstrated commitment to Jumpstart through duration or intensity of service; leadership; acting as a role model to peers; and generated impact on child, family, and community. The applications were scored using a rubric, and the ten applicants with the highest scores were named finalists. Selection Committee members for the 2006-2007 AE Spirit of Service Awards are Debbi Albright, Executive Assistant to the CEO and AE Foundation Board Member; Haley Anderson, AE Decon/Marketing Supervisor, AE Ottawa Distribution Center; Joan Hilson, AE CFO; John Tarvin, Jumpstart Interim President; and Barbara Watkoff, VP of Production, AE Aerie Line.

Profiles of the 10 finalists appeared on AE’s Website in June for public online voting. Nearly 13,000 individuals across the country participated in the online voting. The results were combined with the selection committee scores to determine the five winners of the AE Spirit of Service Award.
