Alum Ed Dunkel Jr. donates $100,000 to Fresno State Engineering program

At the check-presentation ceremony are, from left, Dr. Ming Xiao, Fresno State civil engineering professor; Dr. Jesus Larralde, Civil Engineering Program coordinator); Ed Dunkel Jr., president of Precision Engineering; Dr. Michael Jenkins, dean of the College of Engineering; and Dr. James Crossfield, chair of the Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering and Construction.

A $100,000 donation from Precision Civil Engineering, Inc. (PCE) to the College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno will enhance curriculum and geotechnical laboratories in the university’s civil engineering program.

“This donation provides a great opportunity to expand our civil engineering program – particularly the geotechnical engineering program,” said Ming Xiao, assistant professor of civil engineering.

“It will help transform our current Soil Teaching Lab into a comprehensive Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Teaching and Research Lab. The donation’s impact on our program and on the community is far reaching.”

A portion of the donation will sponsor the annual senior design awards in civil engineering and land development.

An official check presentation ceremony is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at PCE’s corporate office, 653 W. Fallbrook Ave., in Fresno. The event will mark the firm’s 5th anniversary.

“I wanted to give back to the program that helped make me a successful entrepreneur,” said Ed Dunkel Jr., a Fresno State engineering alumnus and PCE’s president and founder. “I hope this contribution will help ensure a whole new generation of engineers for our region.”

Dunkel, a Bulldog Foundation board member, said making a gift to the College of Engineering is an important way to support university academics. He made a similar financial commitment to Fresno State student athletics.

Dr. Jesus Larralde, Civil Engineering Program coordinator, said the laboratory that will be made possible by the donation will allow faculty to conduct research “on the complex areas of behavior of building foundations and soil structures in difficult conditions, such as earthquakes, high water pore pressure and others.”

“This thoughtful and much-needed support from Precision Civil Engineering will help students learn innovative, cutting-edge techniques to characterize soil materials and their relation to structural performance and engineering design,” Larralde said.
