A variety of road and parking projects span the Fresno State campus. The campus community and visitors are encouraged to arrive early and follow the direction of traffic personnel as well as extra signage around campus. Following are synopses of the projects:

Chestnut Avenue widening

This road work increases traffic congestion during peak commute hours as well as when there is an event held at the Save Mart Center.

We expect the section of Chestnut between Shaw Avenue and Matoian Way (just north of the Save Mart Center) to be paved and reopened in late August for the start of the fall semester. That will allow access to the campus through the Save Mart Center parking lot.

Work on Chestnut between Bullard and Matoian will continue into the fall. The intersection of Barstow and Chestnut Avenues remains open, including access to the Farm Market.

Completion of the entire project is scheduled for late 2007.

Parking and traffic issues

The beginning of the semester is always a busy time with increased traffic congestion. We ask that drivers be patient, plan ahead and look for further information on signage around campus. In addition, there will be regular updates on radio station 1040 AM and the traffic hotline, 278-6040. Also, any traffic advisories and quick news updates are always available on www.FresnoStateNews.com.

Parking lot construction projects will temporarily add to parking and traffic issues:

Lot G, Lot F and Frontage Road in the vicinity of Shaw and Cedar and new the residence hall. In order to improve security in Lot G at Shaw and Cedar, the access from Lot G to the frontage road is no longer available. The only access to Parking Lot G is from Scott Avenue off of Cedar. The frontage road is being renovated and terminated at a new cul-de-sac south of Parking Lot F between Homan and Sequoia residence halls. The frontage road will become a two-way street between Barton Avenue and the entrance to Parking Lot F, and will be the only access to Lot F.

Lot V at Shaw and Woodrow. During the summer, 10 parking structures were constructed in this lot, which is west of the Student Recreation Center. Photovoltaic panels installed on top of the metal shelters provide shade for 680 parking spaces. There also will be a row of 10-hour metered parking spaces on the north end of the lot for students and visitors. The lot is tentatively scheduled to re-open in October.

Alternative parking areas. Students are encouraged to utilize parking in the following lots:

The North Lot at the Save Mart Center (available on non-event days).

Lot S south of Bulldog Stadium, with access to campus through Bulldog Lane.

Lot Y on the north side of Barstow between Woodrow and Chestnut.

The Dog Run, a campus shuttle, offers rides on a pre-set circuit Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on northern and southern routes and from 6 to 10 p.m. on the southern route only (residence halls to Student Recreation Center). To view a map of the stop, see www.fresnostatenews.com/2007/04/DogRun6x4.pdf

Special note – Aug. 28

On Tuesday, Aug. 28 a concert at the Save Mart Center in the evening will cause greater than normal traffic congestion. The Save Mart Center has agreed to offer parking for students in the North Lot until 3:30 p.m. on this day. Vehicles that have not exited the lot by 3:30 p.m. will be cited and/or towed.

Faculty, staff and students leaving campus the evening of Aug. 28 should exit toward the west of campus to avoid event traffic.

Media questions about traffic and parking should be directed to Amy Armstrong at 278.6709.
