Tree Fresno honors Fresno State

Ryan McCaughey, manager of Grounds and Arboretum at Fresno StateCalifornia State University Fresno was presented the Judges Special Award by Tree Fresno at its Cityscape Awards and Benefit Dinner on Sept. 14.

Fresno State was recognized for its “continuous and varied efforts to enhance the community not only by beautifying but by educating the general public as well as the students about horticulture options.”

The university was cited for making a “concerted effort” to enhance many areas of the campus, which is designated as an arboretum.

Among the areas mentioned in the presentation was the Agricultural Sciences Building courtyard. A recent project took an underutilized area and made it into an inviting space for students to gather and study. The trees provide a canopy to the seating areas and the arbor blocks some of the view to an adjacent parking lot.

“The university is to be commended for its efforts and we look forward to the new Library and garden project,” said John Valentino, a Tree Fresno board member who made the presentation to Fresno State.

Accepting the award for the university were Bob Boyd, associate vice president for Administrative Services, and Ryan McCaughey, manager of Grounds and Arboretum.
