USU Productions at California State University, Fresno is again joining in the national “Cotton. from Blue to GreenT Denim Drive” to help victims of Hurricane Katrina with a month-long campaign that begins Monday, Oct. 1.
Tables will be set up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the University Student Union balcony (main floor, outdoors). Donations of old denim material, which includes jean pants, skirts and jackets, will be shredded and turned into insulation that will be used to assist in helping to rebuild hurricane ravaged homes in Louisiana.
Cotton’s Dirty Laundry Tour will travel to 11 college campuses across the country heighten awareness and exposure of cotton among college students. Through Nov. 9, donations can be dropped off at Fresno State at the USU, Women’s Resource Center, the Student Activities Office, Smittcamp Alumni House, Student Recreation Center and the University Courtyard Atrium desk.
Shawna Blair, program adviser for University Student Union Productions, said this year’s goal is to collect 2,700 denim items. Last year, 2,611 items were donated. As an incentive for students donating, key chains will be given away.
Building on the success of the last few years, the denim drive is a call to action to donate old denim and give it “new life” by converting it into natural fiber insulation. Once the denim is collected, Allan Company will bale the denim, JBM Fibers will process the denim to its original state, cotton and then Bonded Logic, Inc., a leader in natural fiber insulation, will convert the denim into UltraTouch Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation.
In 2006, the denim drive nationwide collected 14,566 pieces of denim. The donated denim was converted to Ultra TouchT natural fiber insulation and helped in the building more than 70 houses throughout the Gulf Coast region.
