Jaime Flores – A scholar with a heart for health

Jaime FloresJaime Flores, a junior from Hollister, cares about good health. Especially good health in children.

Her commitment to education and community service, and her dedication to becoming a leader in the fight against childhood obesity resulted in her selection for an elite award from the California State University system.

In September, Jaime was named a winner of the 2007-08 William R. Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement.

The award provides $3,000 scholarships to students who are high-performing and needy, and who have experienced personal hardships. It also recognizes community service and personal achievements.

Jaime was recommended for the award by Fresno State President John D. Welty

Jaime is majoring in food and nutritional sciences with an emphasis in dietetics. Her goal is to teach youngsters about the dangers of obesity and the need for a healthy diet.

A Smittcamp Family Honors College student, she maintains a 3.98 GPA. She mentors a l0-year-old boy who attends a school for troubled and abused children. She volunteers at several community and on-campus events, including the Buddy Systems program, which helps develop motor skills of physically and mentally challenged youngsters through horseback riding.
