National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 15-19, will be observed at California State University, Fresno with two student events included in Homecoming week: Milk and Cookies Night and the Wicked Wellness Carnival.

On Wednesday (Oct. 17), from 10 p.m. to midnight, Milk and Cookies Night will be held in the University Courtyard.

On Thursday (Oct. 18), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the University Health & Psychological Services’ Wellness Services program will present the carnival in the Memorial Garden (south of Kennel Bookstore), complete with pumpkin decorating and a haunted house.

“The purpose of the Wicked Wellness carnival event is to expose students to alcohol safety messages in a unique and creative way,” said Tara Powers, a graduate student and Student Wellness Ambassador coordinator.

Students will be able to dunk their professors from noon to 1 p.m. to raise money for Alcoholics Anonymous. The cost is $1 per ball.

“Everyone is welcome to come cheer on

[or dunk] these brave professors, who are making a splash for a good cause,” Powers said.

Participating profs are Tim Anderson (Bulldog Marching Band director), noon to12:15 p.m.; Bob Pettitt (Kinesiology), 12:15-12:30; L.J. Fine (Recreation Administration and Leisure Studies), 12:30-12:45; and Michael Caldwell (music), 12:45-1 p.m.

Free t-shirts will be given to the first 500 students at the carnival, whose other attractions include barbecued corn from the Farm Market, airbrushed tattoos, palm reading and face painting.

“We hope these activities will encourage students to stay safe and healthy during Homecoming Week and the rest of their college experience,” said Kathleen Yarmo, wellness coordinator for University Health and Psychological Services.

Wellness Services offers one-on-one nutrition counseling, alcohol education, nutrition education and wellness self-assessments. It includes the Social Norms and Wellness Ambassador programs.

The carnival is being coordinated by Wellness Ambassadors, a group of students who are peer educators and role models at Fresno State to help develop leadership skills. Wellness Ambassadors also have the opportunity to enhance their personal wellness through training, weekly projects and self-assessments.
