FresnoState Magazine defines university’s global roles

Fall 2007 issue of FresnoState MagazineWhere in the world is Fresno State? All over the world!

The just-published Fall 2007 edition of FresnoState Magazine focuses on some of the many ways Fresno State helps students, faculty, staff members and the community be better citizens of the world.

The 50-page magazine is being distributed to nearly 125,000 alumni and friends of Fresno State.

In his introductory remarks in the magazine about “a world of opportunities” the campus offers, President John D. Welty provides a glimpse of Fresno State’s unique role in connecting people with the rest of the globe.

“Each year we welcome to our campus hundreds of students and faculty from outside of the United States, who help us expand our horizons as they expand theirs,” Welty writes.

“Through partnerships, initiatives and exchanges, we send students and graduates out into the world – even into space – to study and pursue careers, learn about other cultures and share their own perspectives.”

FresnoState Magazine adds perspective to his words in stories about alumni Phillip V. Sanchez, who was U.S. Ambassador to Colombia and Honduras, and Dr. G. Wayne Craig, a research chemist in Switzerland helping provide food for a hungry planet. There are stories about a university-sponsored study tour of India for students, faculty, alumni and community members; students from here and abroad; and faculty whose writing is popular in languages other than English around the globe.

Also in the magazine:

  • Tanya Crabb, a native Jamaican who is on the staff of University Outreach Services, writes about her experience as the first in her family to attend college.

  • Fresno State’s role in “powering the New California” is defined as a multifaceted effort to recognize and resolve the challenges facing fast-growing, diverse Central California.

  • The accomplishments of Fresno State alumni are recounted.

  • Athletics Director Thomas Boeh discusses the university’s initiatives.

  • Newscaster John Wallace (KGPE, Channel 47) talks about being a Fresno State fan, supporter and parent of Bulldog student-athletes.
